Registering for a Continuing Education course
Students may register for a Continuing Education course (provided that all requirements have been met) using one of five registration methods. You may register by: telephone, using a credit card; by fax, using a credit card; by mail, with cheque, money order or credit card; over the internet, using a credit card; or in-person, using a credit card, cheque, cash or debit card. The Registration Department requires the COURSE CODE and payment in full at the time of registration.
Obtaining a certificate, diploma or graduate certificate through Continuing Education
Students wishing to complete a certificate, Diploma or Post-Diploma by studying part-time with Continuing Education, may register for and study the courses as their schedule allows. Program eligibility requirements will depend on the chosen program. In the case of diplomas or graduate certificates, the admission criteria will follow the post-secondary eligibility guidelines.
Graduation from a diploma or graduate certificate program
Those students, who have successfully completed the requirements in a program of studies through Continuing Education, and who obtain a GPA (Grade point Average) of 2.0, may apply to graduate by filling out an application in the Registrars Department. The required Grade Point Average is obtainable by achieving a grade of over 60% in most subjects. There will be a $30.00 graduation fee, payable at the time of application, and successful graduating students may choose to participate in the convocation ceremonies.
Admission to postsecondary programs
College eligibility
The minimum admission requirement for postsecondary programs is one of the following:
Mature student status
Applicants, 19 years of age or older as of the first day of school, and who do not possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), may be considered for admission as mature students. Students lacking the necessary academic requirements may have to complete academic upgrading as outlined by the college. Mature applicants are considered on an individual basis and should contact Admissions as early as possible to determine their eligibility for admission.
Program eligibility
Some programs require that applicants meet additional admission criteria. These may include specific academic prerequisites; the completion of an essay, test or questionnaire; or the submission of a portfolio or medical form. The admission eligibility requirements for each program are listed in detail in the program description section of the course calendar. It is the responsibility of each applicant to complete these requirements as part of the admission process.
Students with special needsThe Centre for Students with disabilities assists students who require accommodations to be made in order to be successful at college. Students are encouraged to contact the Centre for Students with Disabilities office if they plan to attend Durham College, so that supports can be put into place. Supports may include adaptive testing arrangements, FM hearing systems, peer tutors, access to computers and special software, visual aids, counselling, and much more. For more information please call 905.721.2000 ext. 2364.
Studying as a part-time day student
If space allows, a student may enrol in day courses on a part-time basis; however, approval and registration will only occur at the commencement of classes. Formal application for part-time studies may be made through the Admissions Office at Durham College. Students may contact them at 905.721.3046.
Cancellation of a course or program
The college reserves the right to cancel any course or program with insufficient enrolment or any program where employment opportunities do not appear adequate to justify the number of students graduating. Prior to a decision to suspend or phase out a program, Durham will give students an opportunity to complete the program at the college. However, there may be special circumstances where this is not possible or where a transfer of the students to another college would be more practical for both students and Durham College. Under such circumstances, Durham College will assist the students to become enrolled in the same program offered by another college located within a reasonable distance from Durham College.
