Students study on campus after fire takes place at local high school
Grade 11 and 12 students from Cartwright High School were happy to accept Durham College's invitation to finish their assignment on campus.
Durham College recently opened its doors to 24 students from Cartwright High School in Blackstock, Ontario who used the college's chemistry labs to complete an assignment. The students, who were in Grades 11 and 12, took advantage of the college's interactive learning environment and quality equipment for their studies.
A fire at their own school in late March prevented them from remaining inside their classrooms and they have been working at the local library and public schools. Although most of the building is intact, the smoke damage is severe.
The Grade 11 students took 11-U Chemistry which studies acid based titration and molar mass reactions with their teacher Peggy Gray; Darlene Guy, a Durham College professor; and Jamie Wallace, a Durham College technologist.
The Grade 12 students took 12-U Chemistry which studies equilibrium and rate reactions with their teacher Steven Bailey and Amy Lewis, a Durham College technologist. Two of the Grade 12 students will be attending UOIT next year.
Susan Todd, associate dean of the School of Applied Science & Technology worked with both groups of students during their time at Durham College, including giving them a small campus tour. Todd said the students enjoyed their day at Durham College and that it was more than happy to accommodate them.
