It's one, two, three strikes you're out at the old ball
game - or at the first annual Campus Summer Classic where four teams (48
players) competed in an afternoon baseball tournament for faculty and staff under
the sun on Friday, June 8.
Teams played 30-minute games throughout the afternoon with
every team guaranteed three games and at least one playoff round. The Campus
Ice Centre and Campus Tennis Centre team was the big winner and will showcase
its trophy in the various offices of its members for the next year. It defeated
a team from Finance and Facilities in the final.
In addition, each player contributed $5 to the tournament
with all proceeds going to the Special
Olympics Ontario Spring Games being hosted on campus in 2008.
"It was great to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather,"
said Scott Barker, campus recreation co-ordinator. "We have a lot of
first-class facilities on campus and I was really happy that we were able to
put them to use. Everyone works so hard throughout the year so providing
opportunities for them to break away is very important and beneficial."
Following the tournament, Shagwell's on the Ridge hosted a
social event where staff and faculty mingled and relaxed after a fun afternoon.
Barker added that many people sent him an e-mail afterwards
stating they had a great time and are hopeful for the Campus Summer Classic to
continue.
