Two boys practise at a Tennis Summer Camp for Kids. The popular camps run every week of the summer at the Campus Tennis Centre on Durham College's Oshawa campus.
With only about a month before the first day of a new school year, kids are soaking up as much fun and excitement in the sun as they can before heading back to class. The summer camps offered by Durham College are well underway, offering a variety of programs for children and youth from five to 17 years old.
For the imaginative minds out there, the Summer Shorts program offers a number of creative activities, including animation, graphic design, multimedia, drawing, journalism, painting, sound design, games, moviemaking, photography and sculpting.
Each of the programs enables teens over 13, adults and educators to explore their artistic abilities in some of the coolest computer labs and art studios on campus. A weeklong experience, participants meet new people and learn new skills taught by talented pros.
There are lots fun activities for budding sports stars too. Two new sports camps were offered this year, advanced summer golf camp for children nine to 13, and badminton camp, which wrapped up Friday, July 27 for kids eight to 13. Designed to build upon the experience and knowledge gained from the college's other golf camps, the advanced program focuses on bringing golf swings and games to the next level. The badminton camp focused on all skills relating to badminton and included drills, skills, and games.
Coming this August is elite volleyball camp, which is designed for experienced players from 14 to 18 years old. It focuses on developing skills in order to play high-calibre volleyball at the club, secondary, and potentially post-secondary levels. It also teaches offensive and defensive systems, weight training, mental preparation and training, leadership skills and individual skill correction.
Another exciting camp for kids is the multi-sport camp, which incorporates basketball, volleyball, tennis, soccer and one day of hockey at the Campus Ice Centre. Also featured are dodgeball, King's Court, crab soccer and treasure hunt.
For the aspiring tennis pros, weeklong camps for kids five to 17 include instruction on forehands, backhands, serves, volleys, and overheads, and rackets if required. Special beginner balls are even used for beginners and youngsters.
Sports activities take place in the college's athletic facilities, including the new 90,000-square-foot Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre expansion, featuring a triple-gymnasium, aerobics rooms and training rooms.
