Janine Rodway, vice-president of Trent for Your SA, believes Campus Made will foster motivation among students, encouraging them to learn new skills while providing reassurance that dreams can be achieved.
Ever wanted to learn a special skill? How about a unique hobby or sport?
Your Student Association (Your SA) is bringing Campus Made, an initiative modelled after MTV's hit television show Made, to the Durham College Oshawa campus this spring. Your SA will pay for two students to learn a skill, sport or hobby and the journey will be documented and presented on campus by way of a digital video.
"The goal of Campus Made is to give students a chance to live their dreams. Besides teaching specific skills, it will foster motivation among students to learn new skills, instill confidence which may translate into academics and give reassurance that dreams can be achieved, with a little support and a lot of heart," said Janine Rodway, vice-president of Trent for Your SA and leader of the initiative on campus.
Campus Made will provide students with the opportunity to learn anything from rock-climbing to scuba diving and everything in between. Projects may reflect new interests, vary greatly from students' daily activities or be a lifelong dream. Students must submit applications stating what they want to do, why they have chosen that particular skill and other background information. They will be chosen based on the feasibility of the project, level of interest, who is most deserving (for example, who it will benefit the most) and the longevity of the learned skill.
"Ultimately, Your SA would like to choose students for whom this journey marks a life-changing experience," added Rodway.
Based on the above criteria, two students will be chosen to participate in Campus Made. Your SA will pay an expert for approximately six lessons to teach various skills to the lucky winners. Depending on the project chosen, additional personnel such as a self-esteem coach, nutritionist or sports psychologist may be consulted to ensure maximum results.
The two students who are chosen will have their journey recorded and displayed around campus and on Your SA's website at www.your-sa.ca. A final screening will be held at the end of the year to celebrate their incredible accomplishments.
Students are invited to e-mail Your SA at savpoftrent@dc-uoit.ca or drop by the Student Centre for more details. Applications will be accepted between November and January.
