Durham College President Leah Myers thanks MPP Wayne Arthurs following his announcement of the provincial government's $10-million campus investment.

Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MPP Wayne Arthurs made the return to classes at Durham College a memorable one, with a visit to campus September 5 to announce the provincial government was investing $10 million to build new facilities on the award-winning and state-of-the-art campus shared by Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT).

Arthurs, who is also the parliamentary secretary to the provincial minister of finance, made the announcement in the Campus Library's fireside reading room and was greeted by students, including Fraser McArthur, president of Your Student Association (Your SA), faculty, staff and members of the Durham College leadership team, including President Leah Myers.

"All of us at Durham College welcome this significant financial commitment by the provincial government," said Myers. "We share a unique and vibrant campus with UOIT, and we are pleased that the provincial government recognizes that something special is happening here. The building of new facilities on our unique campus will provide critical new space and opportunities for students. It is essential that all our students have the high-quality classrooms and lab facilities that they need to excel in our market-focused programs, to be successful in their future careers, and ultimately to contribute to the prosperity of our region and province."

The new funding is part of a $50-million investment announced in the 2007 provincial budget for new capital projects and supports the McGuinty government's $6.2-billion Reaching Higher plan.
