Durham Lords Amanda McArthur, shortstop, and outfielder Haley Kelly, give their all as the women's fastball team kicks off its 2007-2008 season. Go Lords go!
The Durham Lords varsity athletic program kicked off the 2007-2008 intercollegiate season on a high note recently, upholding the Lords' reputation for success.
Teams are already seeing success in soccer, fastball, baseball and golf, led by head coaches Stan Bombino (men's soccer), Vaso Vujanovic (women's soccer), Jim Nemish (women's fastball), Sam Dempster (men's baseball) and Mike Duggan (golf).
The Lords men's soccer team opened their pre-season at home against Niagara College with a 4-0 victory, while the women's team, the defending Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) champion, played at home as well, taking on the Vaughn Strikers Club team with a 6-0 victory.
The Lords diamond clubs began their seasons on the road, with the defending OCAA champion women's fastball team making its annual trip to Rochester, New York for a four-game series against top Munroe College of Rochester. The ladies lost the first two games, with the second two being rained out. The Lords' baseball team started the season with a doubleheader against Jefferson College, New York, losing both games. After their game against Queens University in Kingston, Ontario was rescheduled for later in the month, they opened their Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association (CIBA) regular season action against York University, winning both games.
The OCAA Golf Invitational kicked off the season at Lakeridge Links Golf Club in Brooklin, Ontario, the official course of the Durham Lords. The men's team had a great day finishing on top with two of the top six individual golfers hailing from Durham College.
Offering varsity sports such as golf, women's fastball, men's baseball, women's and men's soccer, women's and men's basketball, and women's and men's volleyball to students for almost 40 years, the Durham Lords program has proven to be among the best in the province.
Over the years the Lords have won numerous provincial and national team and individual championships, along with All-Academic honours. Durham has also hosted countless provincial and national championship tournaments.
