Durham College students will begin voting today for their representatives on the Student Association that will serve May 1, 2008 to April 30, 2009.
With six positions remaining and 14 competitors running, the outcome rests in the hands of students. Voting begins February 6 to select representatives for the Student Association and once again candidates are campaigning through the hallways at Durham College, encouraging their peers to vote.
The SA was established for students and represents those enrolled at Durham College, UOIT and Trent in Oshawa. It also provides a variety of services, events and advocacy for student rights, playing a significant role in Durham College's reputation for offering an outstanding student life experience.
"Each student should decide which candidate they feel will spend their money best," said current SA president Fraser McArthur, who is not running for re-election. He also said students need to support candidates that they would want representing the schools within the community.
Valerie Naylor, vice-president of Trent in Oshawa has already been acclaimed, along with four faculty and program representatives.
The term for the new SA runs from May 1, 2008 until April 30, 2009. Members work full-time summer hours to plan for the upcoming academic year. Once the fall semester hits, only the president and vice-president of internal remain full-time, while the others become part-time employees.
Students can vote online at www.your-sa.ca starting Wednesday February 6. Voting polls will also be stationed in the South Wing of the Gordon Willey building, in the Founding Deans' Atrium of the Science building, residence and at the Whitby campus. Polls close Friday, February 8 at 5 p.m.
