Two second-year students in Durham College's Water Quality Technician program have received the Walkerton Clean Water Centre Award for their academic achievements and outstanding efforts in field placement.

Angela Robert and Andy Seeley were honoured on February 21, at a program event where students networked with prospective employers. Dr. Saad Jasim, chief executive officer of the Walkerton Clean Water Centre, presented $1,750 to both recipients.

Robert and Seeley submitted essays explaining why they should be considered for the award and letters of reference from their placement employers. Eligibility criteria included completing certain water technician courses, having a minimum 3.0 grade point average, and an operator-in-training licence.

"This is great recognition for the hard work I've done," said Robert, who aspires to become a Level 4 water operation technician for the Municipality of Durham Region.

Being part of the first Water Quality Technician graduating class, Seeley commented on the benefit of receiving recognition for his work. He aims to become a wastewater facility supervisor.

The Durham College Water Quality Technician program provides students with the knowledge, training and certification needed to flourish within the water and wastewater treatment industry, nation-wide. Graduates will also be in demand by other industrial operations, environmental monitoring agencies and government laboratories. The first class will graduate from the program in Spring 2008.
