More than 100 high school students and their families recently visited Durham College for the annual In-the-Loop information night.
The Durham College Admissions and Recruitment department recently welcomed more than 100 grade 9 to 11 students and their families to campus for the annual In the Loop event. The focus of the evening was to inform parents and students about the exciting post-secondary opportunities at Ontario colleges.
"It's not university or nothing," said Stephanie Thomson, an admissions and recruitment officer. "There are various career paths that can be taken through college and apprenticeship programs. Durham College alone offers more than 80 full-time programs taught by exceptional professors through interactive learning environments."
Admissions and Recruitment representatives at In the Loop talked with guests about Durham College's many student services, including financial aid, the Learner Support Centre, Hired Career Services, Student Life office, and the Centre for Students with Disabilities.
Thomson also spoke to the group about the college system, how to apply for college, the program structure and Durham College's state-of-the-art facilities.
"Durham College is here for all students and we are very attentive to their needs," she said. "Success matters in every area, from academics to student services, to student life opportunities and campus safety."
Nathalie Stutt, an admissions and recruitment officer, enlightened visitors on the vast opportunities for those interested in skilled trades. There are currently 17 apprenticeship programs offered at Durham College, where students utilize state-of-the-art machinery such as boom and crawler cranes and elevating devices at the Whitby campus's Skills Training Centre. Durham College is the only college in Ontario to offer an Elevating Devices Mechanic apprenticeship program and has an operational elevator and escalator on site.
In the Loop also featured Durham College student ambassadors leading tours through the Oshawa campus's award-winning library, Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre, 150-seat Computer Commons, spacious classrooms and much more.
