Chartwells food services at Durham College will celebrate Nutrition Month by promoting balanced food choices and healthy lifestyles.
Students strive to succeed in and outside the classroom, but what about in the cafeteria? Chartwells food services at Durham College, along with Dietitians of Canada will celebrate nutrition month by promoting health and wellness on campus.
From March 3 to 31 campus food locations will host information booths and contests to encourage healthy food selections. Guest chefs, promotions and additions to the Balanced Treats menu will help students make or strengthen healthy eating habits.
"Balanced eating focuses on consuming enough nutrients from all food groups in Canada's Food Guide," said Erin McKnight, Chartwells marketing manager. "We provide students with the opportunity to eat balanced meals, which increases energy levels, assists in brain function, reduces stress, helps weight control, and lowers blood pressure."
Chef Deb, a personal chef, food writer and owner of Culinary Caravan, will cook up a healthy Mexican menu on campus March 19. She is the winner of The Heart and Stroke Foundation's 2008 Durham Region Chef Challenge. Students' taste buds will be tickled once again on March 26 when Chef Zubin Aria from the Copper Chimney serves Indian cuisine.
"The need for ethnic flavours is evident at Durham College, with the diverse group of staff, faculty and students from a vast number of countries," said McKnight. "Chartwells constantly adapts its menu to align with the campus's growing cultural representation."
Chartwells has been providing students, faculty and staff with superb food choices for 13 years. The food service created the Balanced Choice nutrition program in 2006, which provides nutritious food at all of its dining areas on campus. These healthier foods are easily identified with labels and include full meals and on-the-go snacks such as salads, sandwiches and vending selections.
Whether students are racing to class and need a quick energy boost or want to purchase a meal, they can eat healthy at Durham College.
