Women's soccer player Katie Szeghalmi and basketball guard Anthony Batchelor were named Athletes of the Year, as Durham College's varsity athletes gathered on April 4 for the 38th Annual Durham College Athletic Banquet in celebration of the 2007-2008 season.

Szeghalmi, a Paramedic student, led the Lords to their first-ever Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) national medal in women's soccer this fall and second consecutive Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) provincial championship. The soccer team also won the college's inaugural Team of the Year award.

Along with the team success, Szeghalmi was honoured as the CCAA Player of the Year, a CCAA All-Canadian, an Academic All-Canadian, the OCAA Player of the Year, the OCAA Championship MVP, a CCAA Championship All-Star and an OCAA League All-Star.

The Oshawa native was further honoured for her outstanding academic achievements by co-winning the first-ever Bert Dejeet Memorial Scholastic Award with Meaghan O'Reilly of the women's basketball team. The annual award is presented to the athletes with the highest grade point average. Golfer David Reside won the honour on the men's side.

For the fourth consecutive year, Batchelor won the Durham College men's basketball Player of the Year and was named an OCAA East Region First Team All-Star.

This season, the fourth-year captain became the OCAA all-time leading scorer with 1,524 career points, breaking the previous record of 1,434 held by Emilio Rocca of Fanshawe College.

The evening also included special presentations to head coaches Peter Gordon (men's basketball) and Stan Marchut (women's volleyball) for their years of dedication. Both have announced they are not returning next season.
