Durham College Professor Kevin McAlpine has been appointed to the newly created Royal Canadian Mounted Police Reform Implementation Council.
Kevin McAlpine, a professor in the Durham College School of Justice, has been selected as one of only five members of the new Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Reform Implementation Council.
The council, appointed by federal Minister of Public Safety Stockwell Day, was one of the key recommendations of the 49 made by the Task Force on Governance and Cultural Change in the RCMP. The council will provide advice and expertise to the RCMP Commission regarding the implementation plan, as well as provide progress reports to Day.
"The RCMP plays a significant role in the day-to-day safety of all Canadians," said McAlpine. "It is critical therefore that this organization has the leadership, political and community support necessary to fulfil its mandate. I am honoured to have this opportunity to help address the task force recommendations."
McAlpine's prestigious appointment once again exemplifies how Durham College's exceptional professors bring real-world experience to the classroom, ensuring students have access to valuable experiences and resources that will provide them with the market-ready skills required to obtain great careers.
"I would like to congratulate Kevin on his appointment to the RCMP Reform Implementation Council," said Stephanie Ball, dean of the School of Justice. "Since joining the School of Justice shortly after his retirement as chief of the Durham Regional Police Service, Kevin has brought considerable knowledge, experience, enthusiasm and love of his first career, policing, to his new career, teaching."
The council's members were selected for their expertise and backgrounds, which reflect a range of valued areas, including policing issues, public and private sector management, governance and change management. McAlpine is joined on the council by David McAusland, who will serve as the chair, Jean-Claude Bouchard, Beverley Busson and Jocelyne Cote-O'Hara.
