Despite the cold and rainy weather, Durham College students from the Oshawa and Whitby campuses clad themselves with safety boots, hard hats and work gloves and pitched in for the Northumberland Habitat for Humanity Youth Build on April 28 in Cobourg.
The students were handed crow bars and sledgehammers and informed they would be demolishing the old interior walls of the houses that were currently on the build site. They took on this task with great enthusiasm.
"Habitat for Humanity is a fantastic opportunity for students at Durham College to give back to their community," said Krista Watson, student development co-coordinator. "Students are able to gain valuable work experience, network with volunteers from all across the region and bond with fellow students on the build site."
A long, hard and dirty day was put in as the students tore down drywall, ripped out insulation and disposed of the waste, but that didn't discourage the students as they eagerly inquired as to when the next build would take place.
The Habitat for Humanity charity was selected to be supported by the Durham College Student Life office based on the feedback from a student life survey conducted last September.
The Durham chapter of Habitat for Humanity will begin its own build in Oshawa in July and are in need of help with fundraising, food service and other committees. To volunteer, please contact Krista Watson at krista.watson@dc-uoit.ca or 905.721.2000 ext. 2616.
Durham College faculty, staff and students are proud to support a number of organizations, groups and events throughout the year, contributing to the building of stronger communities.
