Accessibility

The Library provides equitable access to a full range of services, resources and facilities for all by recognizing individual needs. Anyone with special needs is encouraged to ask for assistance from Library staff.

Library accessibility

  • An automatic door is available at the main entrance
  • Counter tops are desk height at the Circulation and Reference desks
  • Wheelchair-accessible elevator services all floors
  • Wheelchair accessible washrooms are located on the first floor opposite the elevators
  • Guide dogs are welcome

Library services

  • Assistance is available from the Circulation desk at 905.721.3082 for:
    • retrieving material from the book stacks
    • assistance with photocopying
    • booking adaptive equipment in the Assisted Use Carrel room

  • Assistance in using the catalogue is available at the Reference desk. For in-depth reference assistance, contact a subject specialist. Click here for a list of Reference Librarians.

Adaptive equipment

The following adaptive equipment is available (until 30 minutes prior to library closing) in the Assisted Use Carrel room on the third floor of the library:

  • For patrons that have a Durham College issued network login there are three computers available for use. They have been loaded with the following adaptive software:
    Workstation 1: Kurzweil 3000
    Workstation 2: Kurzweil 1000 and JAWS
    Workstation 3: ReadPlease, TextHelp, etc....
  • A scanner is available for Workstations 1 and 2 (usage is subject to copyright requirements).
  • A 22" LCD monitor that can be used with either a laptop or the adjacent computer/hard drive.
  • A Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) that provides magnification of hard copy material is available to all patrons.
  • Durham College students requiring initial instruction can contact the Centre for Students with Disabilities (REACH office) for assistance.
