PQAPA Update - Good news for Durham College

Don LovisaIn my message on April 9 I said that when we receive our PQAPA results it would be a good day for Durham College. In reviewing the preliminary results, it turns out I wasn't far off.

The Executive Summary of the recently-released report includes the following summation: " (i)t is noted that significant and positive change has been felt in the administrative structure over the past two years. This coupled with a revitalized strategic plan and enhanced focus on student learning has literally transformed Durham College and is creating a cultural shift that is being felt by all constituents and stakeholders. This shift is seen as positive and energy-producing."

I take this as a strong endorsement of our efforts to date as well as an acknowledgement that we're undergoing a great deal of change.

As anticipated, the PQAPA Review Panel identified areas of commendation and areas requiring improvement.

We are specifically commended for our Program Guides, the Innovation Centre, the Office of Institutional Research and Government Relations as well as our learning and recreational facilities.

The Review Panel's recommendations include:

  • Consider a formal Complaints Policy and Procedure for general student complaints;
  • Develop formal Program Reviews;
  • Time-tag college policies under review to indicate date of development or revision, date of effectiveness, and date of next renewal; and,
  • Look to find ways to include non-academic areas more in the program review process.

I'm pleased to note that Durham College is well on its way in addressing these key recommendations. Once we receive the full report later this summer it will be shared with the Board, DCLT and ALT as well as the specific areas involved.

In approximately 18 months time, the PQAPA Review Panel will return to Durham College to see what progress we've made. I know that if we keep up this momentum, we're on track for meeting all the PQAPA criteria.

Last week, I shared the preliminary findings with employees. For those unable to attend, I've attached the presentation here 332KB PPT [This link will open in a new window.]. I've also attached a copy of the self-study report 760KB PDF [This link will open in a new window.] that we submitted as part of the assessment.

We'll be sure to continue communicating our status on these initiatives going forward and as always, we welcome your comments and feedback.

Again, thank you to everyone involved in the PQAPA process. Our hard work is being recognized and I'm happy that it will only mean positive things for our students' - and ultimately our - success.
