Co-op/placement

Many of the programs at Durham College/UOIT allow the student to acquire practical experience in a co-op placement with a company in his/her area of study. These relationships are extremely important to the school as well as the students.

Our placement partners often require that Durham College/UOIT meet certain requirements to allow these relationships to continue and to grow and prosper. We in turn want to be certain that the environment for our students is safe and offers a good learning environment.

To assist in clarifying each parties intentions we have developed two agreements:

  1. Statement of understanding:
    • To be used in short, straightforward placements
  2. Agreement:
    • To be used in longer term arrangements with report requirements

These are templates, with the core basic clauses, that can be altered or expanded to suit each situation. It is recommended that the Insurance + Risk Management department be contacted to assist in creating the appropriate document.

Students are often required to have WSIB coverage for these placements when they are unpaid. Students working in approved, unpaid placement agencies are covered by the Ontario Ministry of Education's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board coverage. Forms are required to be filled in, prior to the co-op/placement commencing. Please contact Dawn Kuchirka in the Human Resources department at ext. 2223 for information and forms.
