Aspects of Durham College/UOIT insurance policies
General liability insurance
- This policy covers all staff, (full-time, seasonal, part-time, temporary categories) and all operations that represent scheduled Durham College/UOIT activity and all students, as long as they are acting under the direction of a Durham College/UOIT staff member or the occurrence takes place during an authorized Durham College/UOIT activity. If the Durham College/UOIT function is held on campus, a liability certificate is not required.
- This policy provides coverage for all scheduled Durham College/UOIT activities including any Durham College/UOIT-approved student activity. This extension, however, does not apply to students acting in any way as protest against Durham College/UOIT or any part of it (i.e. strikes, demonstrations, etc.).
Renting of college/university facilities
- While the insurance Durham College/UOIT purchases is for the protection of Durham College/UOIT assets, facilities and individuals who are on official Durham College/UOIT business, it also protects visitors to Durham College/UOIT. While protecting visitors, this creates an exposure when visitors are on the property. Of particular concern is when some of the Durham College/UOIT facilities are rented out to other organizations or groups. Therefore, it is imperative that prior to agreeing to rent out Durham College/UOIT facilities, the individual or group renting the facilities have an insurance policy in place and provide a liability certificate (certificate of insurance coverage) to Durham College/UOIT. Specific limits, terms and conditions of the event should be verified with Elaine Wannamaker at ext. 2259.
Slip and fall
- If an individual, other than an employee, slips and falls anywhere on campus, please report the incident directly to the Security department who will advise the Insurance + Risk Management department.
- If an employee slips and falls anywhere on campus, please report it directly to the Security department who will advise the Human Resources department.
Property policy
PC theft
- There is adeductible clause, per theft, on the Durham College/UOIT property policy.
- A PC loaned to an individual and taken away from Durham College/UOIT premises is the responsibility of the borrower and needs to be insured through the borrower's personal insurance policy.
- Durham College/UOIT does not provide insurance coverage for any personal property of students or staff members located on Durham College/UOIT premises. Please ensure the Security department has assessed your office security. For laptops that are left in the office, please secure with a lock to the desk during the day. Overnight, store the laptop in a locked cabinet, out of sight.

Automobile policy
Durham College/UOIT vehicles/personal vehicles
- For insurance reasons, the use of any Durham College/UOIT-owned or leased vehicle is limited to approved Durham College/UOIT business only. Personal use of any Durham College/UOIT vehicle is strictly prohibited.
- Any driver who is authorized to operate a Durham College/UOIT-owned vehicle must have a valid driver's license with the appropriate class for the vehicle to be operated. In addition, the Insurance and Risk Management department must be notified of all individuals who are operating Durham College/UOIT vehicles for any period of time.
- If a personal vehicle is used to transport students and employees, the insurance on that vehicle is the primary coverage in the event of an accident, whether the driver is an employee, volunteer, student athlete or anyone else driving the vehicle with permission of the vehicle's owner.
If you are an instructor or staff member and use your own vehicle for Durham College/UOIT purposes (e.g. transporting students to field trips), you are not covered by the Durham College/UOIT automobile insurance policy. In any automobile accident, the policy covering the specific vehicle is primary and would respond. The college and university's liability is limited to the mileage expense incurred. Individuals should be governed by good business practices when requesting that staff and students use their vehicles for business purposes. Please note that private insurance companies require individuals to carry business insurance when using their private vehicle for employer purposes.
Rental/leasing vehicles
- Short term vehicle rental (less than 30 days) is not included in Durham College/UOIT's automobile insurance policy. Such rental arrangements must include appropriate insurance coverage.
- When renting a vehicle while on Durham College/UOIT business in North America, you should purchase the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) from the rental company. If third party liability and personal accident coverage is available through the rental agency, it should be taken.
- When renting a vehicle abroad, purchase all coverage offered by the rental agency, including CDW.
- If police are contacted as aresult of an accident, provide a copy of the police report to the Insurance + Risk Management department.
