Job title: Disability Technician - Alternate Format
Salary: Starting rate: $20.46; Four year rate: $23.72

Hours: 35 hours per week (1) one hour lunch; Mon. to Fri. - 8:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Reporting to: Director, Centre for Students with Disabilities

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Under the direction of the Director, the Disability Technician (Alternate Format) will be responsible for managing all aspects of alternate format transcription services for students with disabilities such as; obtaining students' course selection, text book, tests exams and other course material information; acquiring textbooks and other course material from publishers for conversion to alternate formats; developing and maintaining information systems, e.g., databases, including cataloguing and storing alternate format holdings; tracking and distributing transcribed materials to students; liaising with Assistive Technologists, Test/Exam Administrator and other disability staff, academic schools, publishers, producers and external agencies to ensure timely receipt of alternate format materials for the students.
- Identifying and locating/obtaining materials to be transcribed in an alternate format (i.e. Braille, large print, closed captioning, electronic) in a timely manner.
- Contacting publishers to request alternate formats, to develop relationships, to determine processes for accessing or producing alternate formats, and to advocate for access to their materials on behalf of students who require it.
- Liaising with provincial and Canadian libraries, alternate resource producers and publishers to coordinate and share resources for a more accessible system for students with print disabilities.
- Researching the availability of alternate format resources/producers, technology available to assist in this process, and supportive publishers.
- Researching latest scanning/transcribing technologies
- Monitoring the student labs (training labs and test/exam centre computers with assistive software).
- Monitoring and troubleshooting of computer equipment, software applications and assistive technologies to ensure proper execution.
- Installing and testing assistive software in classrooms and general student use areas to ensure system integrity, general safety, and operational capability of equipment.
- Planning and delivery of Transition Program, test/exam processes, online exam sign-up, external and internal presentations (multimedia, PowerPoint etc.), online data collection.
- Other duties as assigned such as assist with front desk coverage
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two year diploma or equivalent in Computer Science, Library Science, Electronics, Information Systems, or Multimedia or the equivalent in training and experience necessary to develop the skills required for the position.
- Minimum two years experience installing, updating, troubleshooting computer software and maintaining computer hardware.
- One year experience working with assistive technology (e.g., screen readers, voice recognition, screen magnification).
- Experience working with students in the field of education or in the service of individuals with disabilities.
- Demonstrated patience and sensitivity to disability issues including confidentiality.
- Knowledge of assistive technologies and OCR software.
- Knowledge of web accessibility for students with disabilities (e.g. HTML, CSS, page design, frames, alt tags, layout).
- Knowledge of alternate materials and media formats (e.g., Braille, audio-recording, electronic files, captioning).
- Knowledge of basic operating systems, network technologies and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge and commitment to the OHRC, FIPPA, AODA and copyright legislation is required.
