SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Reporting to the Director of Communications & Marketing, the Web Specialist is responsible for the development and management of the communications and marketing presence on the Web for both Durham College and University of Ontario Institute of Technology. This includes responsibility for administrative web pages. This diversified responsibility can include writing, editing, creating, collecting, organizing, designing, formatting, programming, development, management, implementation and troubleshooting, and the provision of guidance/direction regarding these pages. The Web Specialist ensures web pages are cohesive, perform effortlessly, navigate successfully, and fulfill the mission and vision of the College and University in areas such as student recruitment, donor relations, and internal and external relations.

  • Develop, manage and maintain the college and university's official web pages by creating current, attractive, engaging, informative and user-friendly communications and marketing materials and images.
  • Coordination of web content on corporate, school, faculty etc sites.
  • Maintain and uphold the institutional web guidelines and policies through monitoring of the site.
  • Review all information and images appearing on the sites.  Edit or remove if deemed to be non-compliant with Web Guidelines, detrimental or damaging to the College or University, or inaccessible to those with special needs.
  • Database/design programming.
  • Project lead on interactive CD ROM projects or other multi-media opportunities for both university and college i.e. co-ordination and scheduling of photography, videotaping and other media as required for such projects.
  • Remain apprised of computer, network, multi-media and other electronic media by researching the Internet, Internet publications, participating in workshops and conferences, and through consultation with external representatives, artists, suppliers, etc. Constantly upgrade knowledge and skills with regards to web development tools including browsers, software, graphic design, etc. and advise Director of Design & Marketing of opportunities, related costs and possible benefits.
  • Assist the Director of Design & Marketing with publications and promotions, both print and electronic, through digital photography and multi-media applications. Advise on and develop web and other electronic methods of communications for the college and university communities to replace printed materials or manual tasks, reduce costs and improve efficiency.
  • Administer the Content Management System (CMS), train users and act as an ongoing resource to faculty and staff.
  • Co-ordinate projects with coworker to establish technical design and needed resources
  • Conduct market research through focus groups, interpretation of youth market demographics and by developing, conducting and interpreting results of market research surveys.  Research and evaluate new electronic communication and marketing tools and incorporate them into the sites.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Three year diploma or degree in Web, Multimedia or Graphic Design.
  2. Extensive experience in the field, superior Internet knowledge along with formal specialized technical training and background in advanced Web page development, design, maintenance, standards, practices, coding, conventions, electronic publishing and Internet marketing to support institutional objectives and strategies.
  3. Proven computer skills and advanced knowledge of PC and Macintosh platforms, word processing programs, desktop publishing, graphic design, including HTML, ASP, PHP, MYSQL, Java Script, XML, Quark, Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Word, Excel, Acrobat, and Web Publishing Tools.
  4. Knowledge and experience in marketing, given the Web's marketing potential and opportunities.
  5. Knowledge of market research techniques, target markets, branding, recruitment, communication techniques, and the ability to evaluate impact of materials.
  6. Demonstrated experience in public and media relations to ensure a consistent message is communicated, and recognition that errors and inaccuracies are viewed by a world-wide audience and could have negative impact on the image and reputation of the College and/or University.
  7. Knowledge of the post-secondary education sector, particularly the mission and operation of a college and/or university.
  8. Photography skills, both conventional and digital, as well as knowledge of the programs used to produce high-quality images for specific Web applications and print media.
  9. Excellent skills in communication including: writing, editing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, proof-reading, research, and knowledge of stylistic conventions.
  10. Experience and creativity in Web page layout and design, including knowledge of colour and design theory, graphic design techniques, and Web development software. Must have a thorough knowledge of how these applications are best applied to the Web and how these techniques vary between browsers and computers, and how they impact persons with special needs.
  11. Ability to manage multiple projects, sometimes confidential in nature, on deadlines. Superior skills in time and project management teamwork, initiative, problem solving, and attention to details
