 Full Time Professor

Durham College is seeking an experienced and motivated individual who shares our commitment to quality and success. The School of Design requires a full time professor to teach in the Game Development program.  The incumbent must be a creative professional with excellent communication and art skills.  He / she must also demonstrate an enthusiastic commitment to program development in the design programs at Durham College.

Successful candidates will have the following qualifications:

  1. Understanding of the current games industry and its needs, demands and trends.
  2. Extensive practical experience within the production pipeline and a strong background in pre-production.
  3. Expert knowledge of principles of design with respect to texturing, lighting and rendering for games.
  4. Extensive practical experience designing "fun stuff", including game balancing, pacing and gameplay tuning.
  5. Well versed in most aspects of asset design, such as BSP manipulation, modeling, texturing, rigging, animating, sound design and lighting.
  6. Well versed most aspects of level design, such as optimization, material generation, terrain manipulation, triggered events, Kismet, Matinee, physics, particle implementation, UI development and cameras.
  7. Expert knowledge in the full range of applicable software packages, especially Unreal Engine (with a strong preference for current version 3), Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop and Pixologic ZBrush.
  8. Two or more years experience as an intermediate or senior level developer or, preferably, a director in a studio with responsibilities for production, direction and mentoring.
  9. Practical experience implementing Unreal programming using UnrealScript will be considered a strong asset.
  10. Strong ties with and contributions to the Unreal Mod Community will be considered a strong asset.
  11. Experience with other "next-gen" game engines will be considered an asset.
  12. An appropriate arts-related undergraduate university degree or three year college diploma a strong asset.

In addition to the above, candidates with the following experience will be given preference:

  • Two or more years teaching experience at the post-secondary level with
    these skills and abilities:
    • Curriculum design.
    • Respects and accommodates the different learning styles of the learners.
    • Engages and motivates learners in active and collaborative learning.
    • Incorporates effective assessment strategies.
    • Uses technology in teaching and learning.
    • Engages in ongoing faculty development opportunities.
  • Pre-production directorial experience including scriptwriting, story-boarding and concept art direction.
  • Able to review and assess reels with regards to new hires for game studios.

Those candidates selected for an interview will be required to demonstrate their presentation and teaching abilities by providing a 20-minute presentation or lecture. Topic details will be provided when interviews are scheduled. Candidates may also be required to present an art portfolio and or demo reel prior to the interview.
