Freedom of Information

Under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) Durham College is required to abide by all regulations set out by the act with respect to the collection, use, disclosure, retention and destruction of personal information, including:

  • ethnic origin, race, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation
  • information regarding education, financial, employment, medical, psychiatric, psychological or criminal history
  • identifying numbers e.g. S.I.N.
  • home address, home telephone number
  • personal opinions of, or about, an individual
  • personal correspondence
  • the individual's name where it appears with or reveals other personal information

Information pertaining to an individual acting in his/her business or professional capacity is NOT considered personal information including; an individual's name, position and/or records regarding routine work matters.

Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act provides an individual with the right to access particular records and personal information that is held within an institution.  The purposes of this act are the following, as per the FIPPA and can be found at:

  • necessary exemptions from the right of access should be limited and specific
  • decisions on the disclosure of government information should be reviewed independently

b.  to protect the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information about themselves held by the institutions and to provide individuals with a right of access to that information

Individuals requesting information should submit their request in writing by completing the form below.  Please provide adequate data in order for your request to be concluded and forward the completed form to the attention of the Director, Benefits and Human Rights in the Human Resources Department.  Please note that when an individual requests information they must also submit a $5.00 payment as fee for this service, along with the completed form.
