Personal safety issues are a concern for many people these days and Durham College is committed to providing a safe environment for all users of the college. All laser pointers and similar point devices are banned from all Durham College property unless required for instructional use.
DURHAM COLLEGE IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE VERY REAL THREAT TO PERSONAL SAFETY CREATED BY INDISCRIMINATE OR IN APPROPRIATE USE OF LASER POINTERS. Even brief exposure of the eyes to the concentrated power of the laser beam can cause momentary vision problems and permanent loss of sight is possible in more severe circumstances. Recently a number of incidents have been reported and observed and an increasing number of complaints have been received.
In order to ensure the safety of our students, staff and other users of the college, effective immediately, all laser pointers and similar pointing devices are banned and are not permitted to be on any Durham College property, EXCEPT AS STATED BELOW.
Exception: Bona fide use by Durham College faculty and all part-time or contract teaching staff as well as students making a presentation under the direct supervision of a teaching staff member is permitted. The use of laser pointers and similar devices is also permitted by Durham College administrative staff and all other persons authorized by Durham College in writing in advance.
Any unauthorized person using a laser pointer or similar device will be required to forfeit the device immediately to college security. The device will be returned when the individual chooses to leave the property or is required to leave the property. Failure to use a laser pointing device, when authorized, in a safe and prescribed manner or to knowingly point the device at any individual will be cause for disciplinary measures up to and including expulsion and dismissal.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS REGULATION IN ANY WAY IN ANY RESPECT WILL NECESSITATE A COMPLAINT BEING MADE TO THE DURHAM REGIONAL POLICE AND A POSSIBLE CHARGE BEING LAID.
