Connections Handbook --
Identifying and Referring Students who are Experiencing Difficulty
Faculty and staff are often in a position to identify
students who are experiencing difficulty. Recognizing signs of
emotional distress and responding with interest and concern is a
critical factor to helping students resolve problems that may interfere
with their academic achievement. Early intervention is the single most
important act that a faculty, staff member, security officer or
health-care professional can do to prevent students from experiencing
difficulty from demonstrating behaviour that may escalate and possibly
result in violent acts.
The Health Centre appreciates the concern
faculty and staff have for the well-being of students and values the
role they play in linking them to campus resources. The following
guidelines outline when professional assistance may be beneficial to
students and how to make a referral to various campus resources.
Information about emergency services and consultations is also
provided.
