What is HPV?

HPV - or H uman P apilloma v irus is a common virus that affects both females and males. There are more than 100 types of HPV. Most oftern, HPV does not cause any symptoms and goes away on its own. However, there are a few types of HPV you should really know about.

Who gets HPV?

It is estimated that 75% of Canadians will have at least one HPV infection during their lifetime. Young women between 15 and 29 years are at highest risk. Because people who have HPV may not show any signs or symptoms, they can pass on the virus without even knowing it.

What can you do to help prevent HPV?

Having regular Pap tests, limiting the number of sexual partners, and regular use of condoms can all help to prevent HPV infection. Vaccination with GARDASIL tm is another important way to help prevent infection from the four types of HPV* which can cause:

  • cervical cancer

  • abnormal and precancerous cervical, vulvar and vaginal lesions

  • genital warts

GARDASIL tm will not protect against all types of HPV. *Type 6, 11, 16 and 18

Who is GARDASIL tm intended for?

GARDASIL tmis appropriate for girls and young women aged 9 through 26 years. Ideally it should be given before you have been exposed to HPV.
