4 GOOD REASONS TO PROTECT YOURSELF

FROM ALL PREVENTABLE STRAINS OF
MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS

  1. You may have already been vaccinated against meningococcal strain C

However, there are actually four vaccine-preventable strains:  A, C, Y and W-135.  Strains Y and W-135 have become increasingly common in Canada, therefore, broad protection against meningococcal meningitis is something to consider.  There is currently no vaccine available to protect against the fifth strain of meningococcal meningitis, strain B.

  2. While it is rare infection, meningitis can be spread from one person to another through close contact.

Examples include kissing, or sharing eating utensils, drinks or water bottles.  In fatal cases, death can occur within 24 to 48 hours after the symptoms appear.  Outcomes can range from full recovery to permanent disability or death.

  3. 5% to 10% of people who get menigococcal meningitis will die, typically within 24 to 48 hours of onset of symptoms.

In some cases, survivors may be permanently disabled.  These disabilities can include hearing loss, neurological damage, limb loss and paralysis.

  4. MENACTRA is the only conjugate vaccine that can protect you against all four preventable strains - A, C, Y and W-135.
