Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. It originated in China more than 2,000 years ago.

Acupuncture involves stimulation of anatomical points on the body by inserting fine, solid needles that are stimulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation.

What is the difference between Medical Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

Medical acupuncture is performed by health-care professionals (eg. Physicians, chiropractors, physiotherapists) who combine this treatment with other therapeutic approaches such as electrotherapy, soft tissue therapy, manipulation, etc within their scope of practice. Acupuncture performed by a TCM practitioner is usually the only form of treatment to be used.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

If performed by a qualified, conscientious practitioner, yes. Licensed Acupuncture practitioners know the human anatomy well, and insert needles in a safe fashion. The instruments used to penetrate the skin are pre-sterilized and disposable. The practitioner is well aware of the concern over infectious diseases, and takes every measure to insure cleanliness as all health care professional do.

What to expect during a treatment?

An Acupuncture treatment consists of inserting fine sterilized disposable needles into specific body sites depending on your condition. Ideally a treatment plan will encompass 6-10 treatments. Typically patient visits are scheduled once or twice a week initially. As your pain begins to subside then treatments are scheduled further apart. Acute problems or problems of lesser severity usually do not require maintenance treatments however occasionally, chronic conditions may require a treatment every few months.
