Overview
To achieve an active and meaningful internationalization strategy at Durham College, faculty involvement is critical.
The Office of International Business Development is working towards the creation of a meaningful process for involvement by faculty in the international operations of the institution.
Goals
Initiatives
Faculty Fellowships: OIBD is developing a program of Faculty Fellowships. These initiatives will provide faculty members with an opportunity to teach in their field at an international project approved by OIBD. All costs associated with this will be absorbed by OIBD and reimbursed to the faculty member or their School as appropriate. Replacement costs will be provided to the School for time invested by the faculty member.
Fellowships range from one to three months, depending on the program, time of year and availability of the faculty member.
A formal outline of this initiative will be completed in early 2008 for comment by the academic area.
International Curriculum Development Initiative: in many cases, the success of a program depends on the internationalization of curriculum. OIBD seeks assistance from faculty in internationalizing specific curriculum and will provide funds for the replacement cost of faculty to a School where a program requires curriculum to be developed.
Internationalization Committee: OIBD is working to create a committee, with faculty participation, of a new cross-institution committee dealing with internationalization. The development of an internationalization strategy goes far beyond individual projects or student recruitment, but drives to the heart of an institution and how it deals with international issues, both in the classroom, in the development of curriculum, in the creation of policies, in domestic student life, and in the execution of partnership agreements.
Summary
The intention of these initiatives is to engage in a meaningful manner with faculty and the various academic areas of Durham College in a long term internationalization strategy at the institution. For further information, please contact Alanna Desaillier at extension 3602.
Overview
As part of the ongoing efforts of Durham College to increase exposure of faculty and students to international issues, the Office of International Business Development has created a new program entitled "International Executive-in-Residence". This initiative provides for an annual opportunity for an individual from a foreign country to visit Durham College and participate in a variety of interactive activities aimed at increasing the understanding of Ontario's post-secondary education system, the institutional interactivity with the community and corporate sectors, and provide enhanced linkages in particular sectors internationally.
Durham College faculty and staff will have numerous opportunities to interact with the International Executive-in-Residence via lectures, auditing of classes, and one-on-one meetings.
The Executive-in-Residence will gain an opportunity to create new linkages in Canada, a better understanding of the role of community colleges in Ontario, and an opportunity to highlight their own sector and geographic knowledge with a wide-community in Durham Region.
Pre and post-visit activities, including the preparation of a report on the experience will be a requirement of participation.
The overall intent of this initiative is to gain exposure to unique cultures and segments of society via a structured exchange of information.
Selection Criteria
Individuals will be selected by the Office of International Business Development. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to the exchange of information internationally, achievements in their field of work, and a commitment to work with the OIBD in developing linkages between their country and Durham College.
Financial Details
Participants will be provided with accommodation and meal vouchers, as well as round trip airfare from their country to Toronto. A variety of activities will be planned as part of the time in Canada. Any personal costs shall be the responsibility of the participant.
Scheduling
The typical length of time for this program is 2-3 weeks including travel.
Two opportunities shall be made available annually for this initiative, one in the spring and another in the fall.
Next Steps
A key success factor for this initiative will be strong on campus interaction and support. Faculty or staff who may wish to participate in the program either by working with an International Executive-in-Residence while they are on campus, or proposing names of candidates, or who wish to learn more about the program can contact the Office of International Business Development at extension 2118.
