August 2008 - Preparing for college

Many students entering college are experiencing increased responsibility so it is important that they learn effective time management skills. This includes being organized enough to incorporate studying, work, social engagements and personal commitments into their schedules. Family members can expect to see dramatic changes as students become more confident and competent in their new learning environment.

Family members are also experiencing a period of change while celebrating this transition to college and adulthood. Building an adult relationship with students requires communication, trust, an open mind and time. While students are becoming increasingly responsible for making their own choices and being accountable for their decisions, it is important for family members to be supportive by avoiding the urge to problem-solve difficult situations and choices. Allowing students to explore their new environment, and to succeed or fail, is very difficult but essential in their development.

Students may be...

  • Excited about the future
  • Saying goodbye to friends and wondering about those relationships
  • Nervous about academic or social uncertainties

Family members can offer support by...

  • Becoming aware of important dates and offering friendly reminders
  • Sharing fears, expectations and boundaries, and listening to students' thoughts
  • Offering more space for independence
  • Learning about services available on campus and offering information when it is requested by students
