December 2008 - End of first semester

Students are busy completing their courses, assignments and writing final exams. The stakes are high and this very stressful month often includes late nights, poor eating habits and skipping exercise. It's no wonder that by mid-December students are ready to relax and have fun.

Students may not have seen their friends for some time and will want to catch up on the past few months. As well, students living away from home throughout the academic year are now used to living independently and making decisions for themselves. This transition from the previous rules and guidelines can be awkward and even create conflicts. Communicating in advance about expectations and holiday schedules can help ensure everyone enjoys the holidays.

Students may be...
  • Tired
  • Excited about plans for the break
  • Reconnecting with friends and family
  • Questioning their academic abilities
Family members can offer support by...
  • Compromising and taking into consideration that students are more independent than in September
  • Spending quality time with students and appreciating that they also need time with old friends
  • Remembering that at the end of a semester, students need a break
  • Engaging in adult conversations - students are more independent now and will appreciate being treated as young adults
