June 2009 - Financial aid and budgeting

It is time for students to begin thinking about their financial obligations for the upcoming academic year. If they are planning on applying for Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) support, they should begin the process early by going online and completing the application and submitting any requested supporting documentation.

Assist your student in developing a financial plan that considers all the costs for the academic year and the available resources, including any financial assistance family members may be able to provide. If students have any doubt about whether they can fund their education, encourage early contact with Durham College's Financial Aid and Awards office to investigate possibilities for OSAP, bursaries, scholarships or on-campus employment.

Students may be...
  • Worrying about how to pay their tuition
  • Working extra hours to fund their education
  • Exploring options with the Financial Aid and Awards office
  • Gathering all required documentation for OSAP
Family members can offer support by...
  • Offering to assist with creating a financial plan
  • Being honest about whether or not they can offer financial assistance
  • Encouraging students to seek the advice of a financial aid officer
  • Suggesting students research opportunities for internal and external bursaries and scholarships
