February 2009 - Summer employment

Is it six more weeks of winter or is spring around the corner? The one prediction we can count on is that Winter break is around the corner, and so is the end of the term and the beginning of summer. February is the ideal time to start looking for a summer job and making living arrangements for the fall.

Summer Employment

The end of the semester will be here before you know it and now is the time to brush up on your job search techniques, update your resumé and start your search for summer employment. To help you get started, be sure to visit Hired Career Services and learn about the variety of services that they have tooffer.

Hired Career Services is hosting a Job Fair on Wednesday, February 13, featuring leading local, provincial and national organizations. These employers have full-time, part-time, summer and internship positions available, offering incredible opportunities for Durham College students.

Making future living arrangements

Here are some things to consider when thinking about your living arrangements for next year:

  • Take a close look at your current living arrangement - Did it work with your lifestyle? Was it conducive to your learning?;
  • Look at all your options - live at home, on-campus or off-campus, with or without roommates;
  • Consider the costs - transportation, rent, utilities and food;
  • Decide what you can afford to do; and
  • Start making arrangements.
Keep in mind that if you are looking to live off-campus that many landlords start to advertise early in the year. Places4Students.com provides assistance for students looking for a "home away from home". Members of the community submit classified to the website advertising rooms, apartments, townhouses and homes available to rent in the area. The site provides an excellent selection of good, affordable accommodations for students.
