There are a variety of opportunities to get involved over the next year. Start the year off right by participating in the various Orientation Week activities. During Campus Extravaganza on Tuesday, September 2, there will be a Clubs and Services Fair featuring many of the on-campus clubs. There are a variety of student clubs aimed at meeting the diverse needs of students. If you have an idea for a club that Durham College does not currently offer you can start a new club. There are many opportunities to take advantage of social events such as: cheering for a varsity team, listening to guest speakers/lecturers on a variety of topics and attending a many different cultural activities throughout the academic year. Show your pride by becoming a Student Ambassador or DC Crew member and help orient potential and new students to the school.
The first year of college promises to be a busy one, so create a schedule to follow which includes time to study, work and have fun! This will ensure a balanced lifestyle as you prepare for tests and finish assignments on time. If you want to learn more about how to manage your time effectively, attend a Time Management workshop at the Learner Support Centre.
When
establishing a schedule don't forget to schedule in some time for
taking care of yourself. Don't underestimate the importance of getting
the right amount of sleep, eating healthy and exercising. Look for the Balanced Choices menu items on campus and take advantage of the fitness facilities on campus. Taking care of your body will help you stay focused, adding to your success. Exercise can also be a great stress reliever!
Don't wait until your last year of college to realize the importance of talking to your instructors. Instructors are open to answering questions and assisting students during their office hours. Use this opportunity to ask clarifying questions and discuss academic performance.
Financial Aid and Awards offer a number of services to full and part-time students with varying financial needs. Visit their website to learn about applying for OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program), scholarships, bursaries and donor awards and become familiar with the deadlines associated with all financial aid programs. It is important that you investigate any assistance that you may be eligible to receive.
Forming new relationships is one of the best things about college, so take time to socialize and meet new people. If you are hesitant about meeting new people, try joining a club or asking your fellow classmates to study one evening over coffee.
