To apply for a student visa to study in Canada, you must go, or write, to your nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate to request application forms and procedures.

Once you have applied to, and received acceptance to, Durham College you must include your acceptance letter with the completed visa application forms. The Canadian Immigration department also requires an applicant to show sufficient proof of finances to support a two- or three-year study time in Canada. Immigration Canada looks at a general cost of $10,000 CDN per year not including tuition costs.

Durham College uses a specially formatted letter that contains all the information required by the Canadian Immigration department. The Citizenship and Immigration Canada website can be viewed at www.cic.gc.ca.

Admission requirements

The admissions requirement is to have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (grade 12) or equivalent. Some programs have subject prerequisites and other requirements. Please note that in order to determine equivalent standing from other countries, the college requires original or certified copies of all documentation and academic records.

Procedure

Complete and mail a Durham College "International Student Application Form" to:

Durham College
International Education Office
2000 Simcoe Street North
Oshawa, Ontario, Canada
L1H 7K4.

Applications can be submitted year-round, but all applications received by February 1st will be given priority for program choices. An application form can be downloaded from this site (above). Applications should be sent as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for obtaining study permits.

Original or certified copies of all documentation and academic records should accompany the application. The student must send proof of graduation as well as subjects taken and marks received. Students who are not graduating until later in the year should send current transcripts along with mid-term marks.

An application fee of $100 Canadian must accompany the application. The fee is to cover the cost of assessment by The International Credential Assessment Service (ICAS) and cannot be waived. Without payment of $100 CDN the application will not be processed.

A letter of acceptance will be sent out as soon as the College has reached a decision (usually within three to four weeks of receiving the application).

An applicant granted admission to a program must confirm acceptance of this offer by sending Durham College a non-refundable deposit of $540 CDN. This deposit will guarantee a seat (place) will be reserved for the student.

After receiving an acceptance letter, students must apply for a study permit from the nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate. The student visa must be obtained in your home country; it cannot be obtained in Canada. Apply for a visa as soon as you are accepted, it some countries the application process can take a few months.

Finally, full tuition must be paid by semester deadline. This deadline is one month before the start of the program.
