Now that you have received a Work Permit you will need to apply for a Social Insurance Number.

What is a Social Insurance Number?

The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a nine-digit number used in the administration of various Canadian government programs. You will require a SIN to work in Canada. Employer's in Canada require you have a Social Insurance Number in order for them to pay you.

How to Apply for a SIN card

To apply for a Social Insurance Number, you must complete an application form. You can obtain an application form from the Oshawa Service Canada Centre at 78 Richmond Street West in Oshawa or by downloading the form from http://www.sdc.gc.ca/cgi-bin/search/eforms/index.cgi?app=profile&form=nas2120&lang=e.

Documents Required

You must provide a primary document that proves your identity and status in Canada, as well as a supporting document, if the name on your primary document is different from the one you are currently using. It is important that all documents are originals and that they are written in English.

You will be required to show the following:

  • Your passport
  • A valid study permit
  • A valid work permit

We encourage you to apply for your Social Insurance Number in person at the Oshawa Service Canada Centre at 78 Richmond Street West in Oshawa. This process is faster and more convenient, as it does not require you to part with your valuable identity documents. You may also apply by mail.

Your card should be received by mail within three weeks from the date you submit your application, providing it meets all criteria.
