Insurance Coverage

If you have purchased Health Insurance through Canam Insurance the following is a breakdown of the services you are covered for:

Hospital
  • If you are admitted in the hospital because of an emergency you are covered by the insurance company up to $1,000,000 over your lifetime
  • If you are hospitalized because of surgery or illness (not an emergency) your insurance will pay for you to stay in a public ward
  • If you are admitted to the hospital for psychiatric treatment you are covered for 30 days over your lifetime
  • You must notify the insurance company within 48 hours of being admitted to the hospital
Medical Services
  • You can see a family doctor once per year
  • You can visit an eye doctor once per year
  • You are covered for x-rays, MRI's, CAT Scans, ultrasounds and biopsies
  • You are covered for the services of a surgeon and 5 follow-up visits
  • If you stay in a hospital and need to see a psychiatrist you will not have to pay
  • If you need an ambulance you are covered for up to $500 per illness or injury or up to $5000 per injury or illness if you require an air ambulance. (The cost of an ambulance is about $240 without insurance)
  • If the doctor says you need crutches, a cane, or slings, you are covered to rent these items. You will have to return them.
  • Any drugs or medicine that a doctor has prescribed to you are covered by the insurance company for a 30 day supply.
  • If you have an accidental injury to your teeth and you need to see a dentist or dental surgeon within 30 days of the accident you are covered for $2,500 per year
  • If you need your wisdom teeth removed you are covered up to $100 per tooth
  • You are covered for one prescription of the morning after pill
  • If you are pregnant your insurance will cover you for the costs of pre-natal care, childbirth and newborn care up to $20,000.
  • If you need to have anaesthesia (the drug that puts you to sleep when you are having surgery) the insurance company will pay for it.
  • You are covered for the services of a chiropodist, chiropractor, osteopath, speech therapist, physiotherapist, or podiatrist up to $500 per doctor.
Travel
  • You are covered while outside of Canada, but not in your home country for any trips that are less than 30 days in length.
  • If you become sick or injured while on a trip and a doctor says you must return home you are covered for expenses of up to $100,000.
You are not covered for:
  • Eyeglasses
  • Birth Control
