The International Student Mentoring Program is specifically designed to assist first-year international students in making a smooth transition to college and to Canada.
Senior international students who are trained on campus services and information are paired or grouped with first-year international students.
Mentors are volunteers who will contact their mentee's throughout the year to chat, answer questions, provide input, etc. The program was not designed for academic tutoring or professional counseling.
A mentor is someone with experience in a role who is willing to share that experience with someone new to the role.
A mentor is a resource, a helping hand, a sounding board and a referral service. S/he is a person who guides another in a positive direction by listening and offering attention, transferable skills, interpersonal skills, empathy, and compassion.
The mentor also sponsors and befriends his/her Mentee(s) and helps them to become more mature, independent, and ready to meet life's challenges.
Successful Mentors are willing to share personal challenges and experiences. They also share enthusiasm for Durham College.
If you are interested in becoming a mentor and sharing your experiences with new Durham College students please come by the International Office in UA2043 for an application form.
