Athletic Complex

Durham College has superb sports and recreational facilities. Indoors there are two gymnasiums that allow such sports as basketball, tennis, volleyball, and badminton to be played. As well there are five squash courts and a fully equipped fitness gym with indoor track, and the campus ice centre. In warmer weather students can enjoy our outdoor tennis courts, and an outdoor basketball court.

There are also softball diamonds, a combined football/soccer field, and a cricket pitch. The Athletic Complex has a sports medicine and rehabilitation clinic available to all students. Sports are a very real part of campus life and there are many teams and intra-mural and extra-mural activities students can participate in. These include: co-ed softball, squash, table tennis, ice hockey, putt-putt Golf, bowling, curling, fastball, co-ed volleyball, tennis, swimming, indoor soccer, basketball, badminton, floor hockey.

Student Centre

Perfect for international students that want to get to know more people on campus, the Student Centre offers sitting areas that are great for talking and relaxing, a game room with arcades and billiard tables, several eating facilities,a bar with live performances, and much, much more. In addition to all the fun and exciting things that you can do there, the Student Centre also houses the Student Association (SA) which can help you personally with any problems that you may have.

Campus Library

The Campus Library offers a wide range of resources to support college programs and to encourage the pursuit of life-long learning beyond general classroom needs. The Campus Library has kept pace with rapidly developing information technologies and changing concepts of information with the acquisition of a number of full-text information databases and library catalogues which can be accessed via the library's Information Commons and over the campus-wide network.

The Campus Library is open 75 hours per week and research and information assistance is available at the information desks.Orientation classes for first-year students are offered early in each term and classroom subject-oriented instruction is provided on request.

Campus Bookstore

It might be simpler to list what the college's Oshawa bookstore doesn't't stock than what it does. Some 6,500 textbook titles,supplies ranging from photography equipment to lab coats, as well as general interest books, gift items, college jewelry and clothing are examples of the products available. The bookstore also offers a great range of computers, printers, software and accessories at prices other stores can't match. Convenient payment methods include cash, cheque, credit card and debit.

Eating facilities

There are four eating facilities throughout the Durham College Oshawa campus. The main cafeteria,situated in the main building, features a wide variety of foods.International Students will be able to select from foods such as pizza,hamburgers, pasta, stir-fry, as well as many other hot and cold alternatives to suit their tastes. The cafeteria also offers a Meal Plan that allows students to pay for a certain amount of meals all at once. Students that are on a strict budget may favor this. For students on the go, between classes, or anytime, there is a Tim Horton's also located in the main building.

Services

Learner Support Centre

The Learner Support Centre is a unique college-wide service. Its primary concern is the academic success of post-secondary students. Its goal is to provide support to students who experience difficulty in adjusting to the academic demands of the college. Post-secondary students must develop the self-direction and self-discipline to learn on their own and also to cope with a greater volume of work and information;therefore, the Learner Support Centre works closely with Student Services, Program Directors and professors to help first-year students make a smooth adjustment to the demands of the college.

The Learner Support Centre's flexible resources are available to students for as little or as much time as they need.

Academic Peer tutoring

If you are having difficulties in any of your academic programs you can get help from a senior student who has successfully completed the course and can help you through tutoring. Students are allowed up to 15 hours of tutoring per subject. The cost is only $5.40 per semester. There is a Computer Learning Resource Centre open to all students. There are computers equipped with tutorials from different programs that will help students learn their subjects at their own pace.

Counselling

All of us need assistance from time to time to deal effectively with situations in our lives. We can help you overcome problems and adapt outranges. Counselling services are available for personal problems,support, stress management, crisis situations and other challenges. In addition to services on-site, the counselling staff also makes referrals to community experts. All services are strictly confidential.Appointments may be made in Student Services, room B205 or by phone at 905.721.3034.

Media services

Media services provides a full range of audiovisual, photography, video and graphic services.State-of-the-art production facilities and expertise in all areas are available for program enhancement. A collection of curriculum-based instructional aids (films, videos, etc.) and corresponding equipment is available for classroom use. Students have access to basic audio/visual production, hardware and viewing facilities.

Health services

Maintaining your health is a vital part of being a successful student. Health services are available to any full or part-time student, staff member at the college, including all international students. The Health Centre is located right on campus. Registered Nurses are available on a daily basis to assess and treat illness or injuries, administer first aid treatment, provide counselling on birth control, monitor blood pressure and offer community health referrals. This service is free to all students. A physician is on campus daily to provide medical services such as immunization, allergy injections, lab work, prescriptions. etc... Appointments may be made through the Campus Health Centre.This service is not free and international students must be covered by a health insurance plan for this.

Budget counselling

Preparing a budget can be a difficult task for anyone. By designing and using a budget as a spending guide, a student's chances of having enough money until the end of the school year are greatly increased. Budget counselling is available from the Student Support Services office.

REACH (Special Needs) - Centre for Students with Disabilities

Resources for Academic Challenges (REACH) provides services to students with; learning disabilities, mobility impairments, medical impairments, hearing impairments, visual impairments, emotional difficulties.
