Oshawa, Ont.-Durham College announces the appointment of Garry Cubitt and Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann as new chair and vice-chair respectively of the College's board of governors. Joining the board are appointed community representatives Paul McErlean, Patrick McNeil and Gerald Warman. Elected governors include Karen Hodgins, JoAnne Horruzey and Karen Tull.
Chair and vice-chair
Garry Cubitt of Oshawa has been employed by the Region of Durham since January 1974. In his current role as chief administrative officer, Cubitt is responsible for 1,700 employees who work at diverse locations in the region. He holds an Honours B.Sc. from Trent University, and a MSW from the University of Toronto.
Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann is program leader of the maternal child program at Lakeridge Health Corporation in Oshawa. Active in her profession and the community, Sunstrum-Mann is past president of the Durham Northumberland chapter of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, and a member of the Emergency Nurses Association of Ontario and the National Emergency Nurses Association. She holds a BA in health studies fromYork University, and has a MBA from Heriot Watt Business School at the University of Edinburgh.
New community members
Paul McErlean, a seasoned technology executive, is vice-president, software sales and technical support, IBM Canada. He has an MBA from the University of Toronto, and is a member of the board for the Ontario Partnership for the Advancement of Skills.
D. Patrick McNeil is senior vice-president, nuclear strategy and support for Ontario Power Generation Incorporated. He is a graduate of Carleton University (B.Sc.). McNeil is the recipient of various honours including the Chemical Institute of Canada Award for Excellence, and the American Chemical Society Award in Analytical Chemistry.
G.O. (Gerry) Warman is director of service operations, General Motors of Canada Limited, Oshawa, Ontario. He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario with a BA in Economics. Warman is currently co-chair of the General Motors of Canada Fixed Operations Advisory Board and is the Canadian Vehicle Sales Service Marketing representative on the global Customer Pay Committee.
New elected governors
Karen Hodgins, elected as a faculty representative, teaches Sociology and Human Relations for the School of Integrated Studies and the School of Justice. After graduating from Centennial College, Hodgins spent 16 years in various positions in the food service industry, including time as a Quality Assurance Manager and Product Development Manager. She began teaching at Durham in 1986. She has her undergraduate degree from Trent University and is pursuing a Master's degree from Central Michigan University.
JoAnne Horruzey, elected to the board by her support staff peers, is Administrative Coordinator, Schools of Design & Communication Arts, and has also served in the Schools of Business Administration, Health and Human Studies and Technology. A strong believer in lifelong learning, she graduated from the Office Administration program in 2000. JoAnne has served on the Durham College Staff Association Committee, Web Registration Committee and currently is on the Laptop Steering Committee.
Karen Tull, a third-year Business Administration - Marketing student, was elected to represent Durham College students for a one-year term. Karen has been a class vice-president and a volunteer with Durham Multiple Sclerosis Society. She has competed in the Ontario Colleges' Marketing Competition 2002, and the Durham College Marketing Competition 2003. Karen emigrated from Barbados to Canada in 1995 to further her studies after having been in the workforce for several years.
