Durham brings home provincial honours for marketing

February 24, 2004

Durham College created the best general-image marketing campaign of any Ontario college last year, according to a panel of judges.

The college took top honours in the category of General Image Campaign/Successful Marketing Strategies at the 19th annual Trillium Awards presentation in Kingston, Ont., over the weekend. A total of eight colleges were entered. The College Committee for Advancement, which represents advancement, communications and marketing professionals at Ontario's 24 colleges, organizes the awards program each year.

"This award is very well deserved," said Dr. Gary Polonsky, president of Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). "A college doesn't lead the province in year 1 enrolment by accident. It takes a lot of strategic thought and talent - and our communications and marketing staff provide a heap of both."

The college's communications and marketing department, which also serves UOIT, submitted a variety of items related to its "A Place for You" positioning statement, including the viewbook, calendar, posters, Web site, and theatre screen campaign. The fall 2003 campaign's objective, based on focus-group feedback, was to distinguish Durham College in the province and to create consistency in our brand. The cover images on our complementary publications - including the academic calendar and viewbook - reflect students from all walks of life, pursuing a myriad of career opportunities as reflected through their footwear. One chair was left empty to imply the opportunity available to each prospective student.

Judges comments noted that the campaign used a "unique approach" and described it as "inviting, clean and simple." Another judge commended the campaign for its "attention-getting design" and "unique imagery."
