OSHAWA, Ont. - The Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario (ILCO) and Durham College's Centre for Integrated Justice Studies are pleased to announce a new partnership to provide continuing career education to practising law clerks across Canada.
ILCO is the primary professional organization for law clerks in Ontario, and has 1,250 members across the province. In keeping with its mandate, the institute promotes professional development and provides educational opportunities that enable members to increase their knowledge, efficiency and professional abilities. Many law clerks seek specialized education in order to achieve the institute's Fellowship level of membership.
"The Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario is proud to announce this partnership for the delivery of online Fellowship courses," said Giselle Piper, the president of the institute. "This is only the beginning, and it is our hope that we can eventually expand this to include seminars and short programs."
Durham's highly successful Certificate in Dispute Resolution course will be among the first offerings made available to students through ILCO's Fellowship program. Future additions may include courses on forensic evidence, family law, securities law, ethics, and intellectual property.
"This partnership builds on the success of Durham College's Legal Administration program and provides an exciting professional development opportunity for our graduates and ILCO members," said Lesley Wagner, a Durham professor and the new co-ordinator of the Legal Administration program.
One of ILCO's main goals is to make career education more accessible to law clerks across Canada through the development of distance-education courses. Durham College is a recognized leader in the provision of both distance and conventional education for working professionals.
The partnership with ILCO is part of an ongoing effort by Durham's Centre for Integrated Justice Studies to become the leading provider of quality career education across the broader justice sector.
