OSHAWA - A significant donation of state-of-the-art software, hardware and technical support is helping Durham College students better prepare for careers in dispatching emergency service providers.
CriSys Limited's suite of software allows data to be assembled and linked to municipal mapping systems and databases. This enables a dispatcher to provide very detailed directions and information to emergency responders. The equipment that was donated is equivalent to that which a mid-sized municipality would use.
The donation by CriSys Limited of Markham, Ontario, was formally acknowledged today at Durham College. CriSys President, Dale Paus, and Sales Manager, Rudie Nagelmakers, attended the recognition event and were formally thanked by college president, Gary Polonsky. A plaque acknowledging the company's generous gift will be permanently installed on the Durham donor recognition wall.
This spring's first graduates of Durham College's one-year 911 and Emergency Response program used the system successfully over the last term. Students in this new program study emergency response, dispatch and communications to pursue careers in the public and private sectors. Employers include fire, police, ambulance, paramedic services, alarm companies, security companies. There were more than 300 applications for 24 available places in the program's first year.
"We are delighted that CrySis Limited made this gift to assist our Durham College students in their educational training," said Bert Dejeet, dean, School of Justice. "This very helpful and generous donation will give our students advanced knowledge of the computerized systems they will find in their future workplaces."
