Durham College alumnus aims for Paralympic gold

June 17, 2004

Oshawa, Ont. - As the college prepares to honour its alumni of distinction at the convocation ceremonies, Durham College is pleased to share the successful achievements of one of its more recent graduates, Eric Flemming of Oshawa.

Eric was recently nominated by the Athletics Canada selection committee to represent the country in javelin and the 100 metre dash at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens. If named to the team on July 6 - the date of the team's official announcement - Eric will compete in Greece from September 17-28. Until then, he plans disciplined training and taking time between sessions to speak to students throughout Ontario about disabilities and sports.

Eric will graduate from the Public and Private Investigations - Graduate Certificate program at tomorrow's 2 p.m. convocation ceremony. He also has his diploma in the Police Foundations Program, received in June 2003. He noted that aspects of the skills he learned at Durham College have helped him to get where he is today: "The program at Durham taught me to stick with it - it motivated me. If you keep pursuing what you are doing, it will eventually all come together."

This is quite an achievement for Eric who started competing in track and field in the early 1990s. He has been a member of the Provincial championship team; the Paralympic's shadow team; Canadian national team; and at the age of 16, he became a member of the World Championship team. He missed attending the Sydney games by a fraction of a second, so being nominated this time around is an outstanding achievement.
