Durham College students returning to class

August 23, 2004

Oshawa, Ont. - It's that time again: Durham College is opening its doors to another year of learning and growth. Exciting events and new facilities await the 5,400 full-time students who are enrolled for 2004-2005. About 2,700 students at the Oshawa campus and about 400 of those in Whitby will enter first year.

The Whitby campus students return on August 23, while the Oshawa campus gears up for its September 7 start date.

Growth
Because of the success and continued growth of the college, we were able to hire 42 new full-time and part-time workers in the past year.

Accommodations
While some students choose to live at home or in an apartment of their own, this year Durham College will be hosting about 800 college students in our modern, on-campus residence facilities. These students have access to movie lounges with large-screen televisions and theatre-style seating; telephone, cable and Internet access in each room; three-piece bathrooms in all suites; a games room; 24-hour security; meeting rooms; and common study areas.

New Programs
New curriculum is being offered to expand upon the almost 100 programs that Durham College students currently have to choose from. This year some of our innovative programs include a two-year Macintosh Technician program and a one-semester Practical Nursing - Post-Certificate bridging program.

Scheduled Events
Social life is an important part of the post-secondary schooling experience, so several exciting events have been scheduled. Some of the highlights include outdoor movie nights, an ice cream social, and a comedy night. Our gym will become a rock venue when Billy Talent and Three Days Grace play at the Oshawa campus in mid-September. Guest speaker Marc Kielburger, co-founder of Leaders Today-an international youth empowerment organization-will motivate our students. Playfair, a group that blends audience participation comedy routines and other exercises, is also scheduled. And, the campus radio station, The FreQ will be entering its second year, acting as the students' voice on campus.

New Facilities
With an expanding campus, students also have new facilities to choose from. They have access this fall to the new 6,794-square-metre (73,000-square-foot) Library. This four-storey building offers learning spaces, classrooms and research workstations, in both wired and wireless environments. There is even a rotunda complete with a reading room and gas-burning fireplace. Students also have the option of using one of our two new labs designed for drawing and animation, or working in one of our new laptop classrooms.
