Durham College student to appear in Sports Illustrated magazine

October 19, 2004

Oshawa, Ont. - A member of the Durham Lords Women's Fastball team, Erin Smith, is getting one step closer to fame, as she is scheduled to appear in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of the October 25 edition of Sports Illustrated magazine.

"I am very honoured to be in the magazine," said Smith. "I would never have thought I would have been selected for something this exciting!"

Smith is an Advertising student from Stratford, Ontario who has experienced an amazing season this year, following three previous years of triumph with the Lords Fastball program. She began playing the sport at the age of six, when her parents signed her up for t-ball. And her love for the game continues, especially here at the college.

"I enjoy playing for Durham College because of all of the support that the school gives the sports teams," she said. "My coaches for both fastball and volleyball are great. They know what they are talking about, and improve everyone's skills to better the team."

This coming weekend, she will be leading the women's fastball team into the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Championships, where she will be looking for a three-peat!

"All the girls I have played with have been awesome and so much fun to play fastball and volleyball with," said Smith. "I have met a lot of great friends along the way."

The Faces in the Crowd section of the magazine recognizes the outstanding achievements of everyday athletes. Many of the individuals profiled in this section are too young to play professionally, but have often gone on to compete at higher levels in their sport.
