Police Foundations students receive donation towards bursary

December 20, 2004

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham Regional Police Appreciation Dinner Committee wants to ensure that students of the Police Foundations program at Durham College have the opportunity to pursue their career options. The committee has donated $10,000 towards future bursaries and forthcoming students.

An initial award of $1,000 will be awarded in fall 2005. It will be presented to a second-year Police Foundations student who has a minimum "B" average, demonstrated financial need, and is a resident of Ontario (with a preference for Durham Region).

"Durham College is educating our officers of tomorrow," said Moe Pringle, co-chair of the committee. "Some of these students will one day become police officers in our community, and weare glad to support these students as theystart their careers of public service."

The donation is also eligible for a one-to-one dollar match from the provincial government's Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF), which will increase the value to $20,000.

"I am delighted that theAppreciation Dinner Committee has created this bursary with the support of the province of Ontario and Durham College," said Kevin McAlpine, chief of Durham Regional Police. "It really is an investment in the development and education of future police leaders."

"It is amazing to see the type of individuals who live in and support our community," said Bev Balenko, chief operating officer at Durham College. "This outstanding act of generosity will ensure that many future Police Foundations students will have the ability to complete the program, regardless of their financial situation."
