Oshawa, Ont. - Durham College has chosen three individuals for its 2003 Alumni of Distinction Awards. The honorees are Darrell Sewell, Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann and Amy White. Alumni of Distinction awards recognize graduates who have excelled in their careers and contributed to the development of the college and/or their communities.
Darrell Sewell graduated from the college's Business-Human Resources program in 1989. He has advanced through a number of positions, to chief human resources officer and corporate director of human resources at Lakeridge Health Corporation in Oshawa. Sewell has contributed to Durham College in many ways, including serving as a board member for the Durham College Alumni Association. As well, he has coached children's sports teams and chaired an annual Ontario March of Dimes charity golf tournament.
A 1988 graduate of the college's Nursing program, Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann is program leader of the maternal child program at Lakeridge Health Corporation in Oshawa. Active in her profession and the community, Sunstrum-Mann is a governor of Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Since graduating from the college's Public Relations program in 1994, Amy White progressed from summer student to director of communications at the Toronto Humane Society. She has given field placement opportunities to eight Durham College students and recently hired two Durham College grads. With a keen interest in professional development, White has completed certificates through Harvard Law School and the Conference Board of Canada.
