Durham College leads Ontario in record-setting enrolment increase

September 2, 2003

Oshawa, Ont. - Durham College is leading Ontario colleges with the highest enrolment rate for fall 2003. Figures as of August 28 show that confirmed acceptances among first-year students climbed 13 per cent over fall 2002 to 3,898 students. Overall enrolment has increased by nine per cent over last year to 5,816 students.

"Durham College is bigger and better than ever before. We continue to add new and innovative programs, improve our services and build inspiring new facilities to help attract students and ensure that once they arrive, students get the most out of their educational experience here at Durham," says president Dr. Gary Polonsky.

Innovative programs to meet employer demands
Durham College offers more than 90 job-focused programs in applied sciences, business, communication arts, design, emergency services, health, human studies, integrated students, justice, skilled trades and technology. Six new programs have been added for fall 2003 to help meet employers' needs including Animation-Computer Arts, Animation-Post-diploma, Foundations in Communication Arts, 911 and Emergency Response, Penology and Youth, and Biotechnology Technologist.

Getting to Durham has never been easier
Durham Region offers new campus-focused transit routes to students travelling to the Oshawa and Whitby campuses of Durham College. New bus routes are offered by the Ajax-Pickering Transit Authority and the Oshawa Transit Commission. Buses run during peak times in the morning and afternoon. Student transit passes are sold in the Student Centre.

A new partner in education
Durham College is also pleased to welcome its educational partner and Canada's newest university, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. The university opens in September and shares campus spaces and selected services with Durham College. The new university brings with it many advantages for students. Students and graduates may qualify for advanced standing in some university programs, helping students obtain their degree faster. College and university professors are collaborating to create academic bridging programs that smooth the transition from college to university.

Students will also benefit from state-of-the-art classrooms in the new 114,000-square foot academic building on campus. A new research library, scheduled for completion in fall 2004, will serve students at both institutions. A new 300-bed residence overlooking a creek and conservation area opened this month. As well, a world-class tennis centre featuring six Har-Tru clay courts and a championship, regulation soccer field will open to students this fall.
