The Durham College Chronicle took a top award in the Ontario Community Newspapers Association's 2002 Better Newspapers Competition.
The Chronicle won first place in the general excellence category for college and university newspapers. The category recognizes overall excellence in editorial, layout and advertising, and professional newspaper editors are among the judges.
"This award is a tribute to our students who work so hard every week to produce a professional newspaper, and to our outstanding faculty who work with them," said Gerry Rose, a Durham College professor and the co-ordinator of the college's Journalism program.
In last year's competition the Chronicle took third place in the general excellence-college and newspaper category, while Durham student Sheryl Kirouac won a second-place award in the student writing category.
Working under the direction of college faculty, Durham students are responsible for all aspects of the newspaper, including articles, photography, advertising and layout. Established in 1973, the Chronicle is published weekly during the academic year.
