Oshawa, Ont. - Students at Durham College's Skills Training Centre took home an unprecedented six medals at the recent Ontario Technological Skills Competition.
John Mehaffey (industrial wiring competition) won a gold medal, Jason Rinaldi (welding competition) and Michael Link Hill (plumbing competition) each won a silver medal, while Mark Asbreuk (welding competition), David Haynes (plumbing competition) and Scott Sykes (automotive service technology competition) each took home a bronze medal. The competition was held in Waterloo from April 28 to May 1. Students Arthur Pawlowski and Todd Perkin also competed at the event.
"Each one of these students did an incredible job in what is consistently an extremely difficult competition," noted Bev Balenko, vice-president, business & skills development, at Durham College. The competitors were judged on the quality of their work as well as their ability to follow instructions and complete their projects on time.
Durham professors Tony Poirier, Glenn Coady and Wayne Precoor, as well as technicians Stephen Owens and Mark Hewton, helped the students prepare for the competition and accompanied them at the event. When he was a Durham College student back in 1996, Coady won a gold medal in plumbing at the Ontario Skills Challenge and a silver medal at the Canadian Skills Competition.
